In “Saigon USA” movie, during his presidential campaign bus in Washington State in 2000, Senator John McCain told reporters that he would hate the “gooks” for the rest of his life.  McCain’s racial slurs discriminate against Vietnamese Americans, who are unable to speak proficient English.  His statement is offensive, using an insulting word that historically has degraded all Asians.  In an online debate, “Vietnamese Studies Group,” Professor Christoph Giebel called McCain to task for using the anti Asian/Vietnamese slur “gooks”.   Giebel critiques McCain for failing to portray a significant, powerful figure to Asian American citizens.
